TELL THE DAMN STORY, ep 430: From Flash Fiction to Full Novels_ Crafting Effective Horror, Part 2

Where do your stories really come from? In Part Two of our special conversation with horror author John “The King” Collins, we move from learning the craft to something much more personal: What does the writer bring to the story? Taking us inside his collection "Altars and Abandoned Houses," John reveals inspirations ranging from Halloween memories, abandoned buildings, and urban legends to a photograph of his grandparents dancing, the loss of family members, grief, love, and memories that refuse to disappear. During the conversation, Alex observes that everything we are—everything we've experienced—eventually filters through our art. John has another phrase for it: “Writing from the wound." But that doesn't mean simply turning pain into fiction. Sometimes the wound contains love. Memory. Joy. Regret. Fear. Even the things we never had the chance to say. We also discuss what makes a good editor, why rejected stories sometimes deserve another chance, how to promote your work through podcasts, how to approach podcast hosts professionally, and how to keep learning even after you've been published. If Part One was about becoming the writer, Part Two asks: How much of yourself are you willing to bring to the story? Have questions or comments for us?
